A Migrant from the warmer parts of Europe and a rare visitor to these shores, a reed bed/wetland bird that is very shy. It does not like its own species, the grey heron, as the grey heron tends to chase the purple heron off when it gets the chance, that’s why the purple heron often hides in the day time and only comes out at dusk. This bird was seen nearly all day every day for some weeks, so that was very unusual.
This photograph was used by RSPB Minsmere on their web site in their monthly reports on sightings of different birds.
